Vans was born in Anaheim, California, on the initiative of two brothers Paul and Jim Van Doren, sons of an inventor and a seamstress. Paul left school at the age of 14 to work in a shoe factory. So far a fairly common story, if not that at some point he had the idea of designing a new type of light shoe that perfectly adheres to different types of surface without letting you slip.

Paul’s idea was to create a trend shoe by taking as a reference the Converse Chuck Taylor and aiming at the basketball market. From this idea, Paul designed the first Vans in history, an Authentic, and opened the first store along with his brother Jim. It was a shop that conceived the product in an artisanal way, from manufacture to sale. "Canvas shoes for the whole family" was the slogan on the box.

Things were going really well and in the following years what was a simple shoe store turned into a chain. At the end of the 70s there were 73 Vans stores all over California and the brand was also present in multi-brand stores.
